The words though and although often seem interchangeable in spoken English, but from a grammatical standpoint, they are not the same. When it comes to writing, however, the difference between these two terms is crucial. In fact, using one incorrectly can create a misunderstanding in your reader. So, the answer to the question, “Can you start a sentence with though?” is not so simple and more complicated than simply yes or no.
Though and although are both conjunctions that can be used to introduce clauses that present a contrast to the idea expressed in the main clause of your sentence. The key difference is that though can also function as an adverb, while although typically only functions as a conjunction.
Both can be used at the beginning of a sentence, but though is more commonly found at the middle or end of a sentence. Though is more casual and can be placed in a sentence where a comma would normally appear, whereas although is more formal and tends to be used more frequently at the beginning of a sentence.
When you use though in a sentence, it implies that the situation you are describing is not what you expected to occur. This is similar to the phrase, “In spite of the fact that…”
Brian hopes to find a job in marketing, though few employers are hiring. He stood in line to get into the job fair, though he knew that he would not find anything there.
The word although is more formal and often referred to as a coordinating conjunction. It is usually used when you want to emphasize a contrast between two ideas or events. The example, “Even though he is older than she is, his concerts put those of most kids half his age to shame,” uses although effectively.
Among some conservatives, there is a traditional objection to the use of although in place of though as a conjunction. However, the latter (earlier all though) was originally an emphatic form of the former, and there is nothing in contemporary English usage to justify such a distinction.
